Robot Lawyer

There has been legal documentation through technological systems, but it goes beyond exploring technology for transmitting and storing legal proceedings to creating a robot lawyer.

Pondering what a robot lawyer does?

A robot lawyer can advocate like a trained, and experienced lawyer would do. A robot lawyer can “fight corporations, beat bureaucracy, and sue anyone at the press of a button”, says Joshua Browder, DoNotPay founder.

DoNotPay is a manufacturing company aimed at making legal information and self-help services available to everyone through the use of technology.

In February 2023, history will record the first robot lawyer to defend a defendant in a US court. According to DoNotPay, the robot lawyer would listen and understand court arguments in real-time and decipher the right legal term to instruct the defendant on what to say in the courtroom via an earpiece.

The AI will be designed to run on a smartphone. A robot lawyer will also work intelligently by making predictions based on its trained algorithms on how a judge may rule in a case and explain the legal reason behind judgments.

In a study on “Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Led Technological Tremors: a seismic shift towards digitizing the legal ecosystem”, Bhatt et al. further enumerated the specific functions of a robot lawyer;

  • Negotiations
  • Contract drafting
  • Legal documentation
  • Render legal advice

A Robot lawyer is effective as a legal assistant with the ability to scrutinize legal problems, identify loopholes, write legal letters for clients and help lawyers identify relevant documents.

While some may fear that robot lawyers may displace lawyers, it is still certain that most legal tasks cannot be undertaken by robots unless trained to do so. A robot lawyer may become a lawyer’s assistant but cannot entirely replace human lawyers.

One major advantage of robot lawyers over human lawyers is that a robot lawyer would never take sides in its legal functions, as it is nothing but technology legislating for peace and justice!

But are you satisfied having a robot lawyer defend your case? How well would you trust a robot lawyer? Answer on a scale of 1 to 4.

1 – I don’t trust robot lawyers at all

2 – I can trust it if it has worked well for others

3 – I somehow trust its ability

4 – I absolutely trust robot lawyers
