Amazon Acquires Healthcare Company

The e-commerce giant announced in late July that it was going to purchase One Medical, a company that operates as a primary healthcare provider.

This is not the first time the e-commerce company has dived into the health space. Earlier in 2019, it launched Amazon Care, mainly to help Amazon employees with their healthcare packages, which other companies are slowly adopting over time.

The senior vice president of Amazon on healthcare services says the reason the e-commerce giant wants to acquire One Medical is because ” We think healthcare is high on the list of experiences that need reinvention.”

One Medical was founded in 2007 and became public in January 2020, just before the lockdowns. It is basically a membership-driven healthcare company that offers an array of healthcare services to its members.

One Medical is a human-centered, technologically powered primary care organization that combines in-person care with digital and virtual care.

This company offers a lot of advanced medical features such as telehealth, in-person examinations, and more.

The San Francisco-based company has more than 180 medical offices in the United States for now, with plans to expand overseas in the not-so-distant future.

The deal was concluded on the 21st of July, with Amazon paying 3.9 billion dollars for the company at a share price of $18 per share. There has been no discernible change in one medical administration for the majority of the time, as everything has remained the same.

With this addition to the Amazon franchise, they will gain access to more customers and data in the health market.

Since Amazon already has companies in Whole Foods, entertainment, web services, and primarily e-commerce, there are a lot of questions raised if they are slowly monopolizing the entire business market and if users’ data can be guaranteed private at all times.

Apart from that, this is an excellent step for Amazon and the entire healthcare sector, as there will surely be more technological advancements with time.
