Meta Is Launching A Designer Avatar Store

On the 17th of June 2022, during an Instagram live session with Eva Chen, Instagram’s vice president of fashion partnerships, Mark Zuckerberg announced that Meta is launching a digital designer clothing store called the “Meta Avatars Store.”

The store will allow users of Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger to purchase digital clothing for their avatars. The first brands on the store are Balenciaga, Prada, and Thom Browne, and clothes include a motocross outfit, a logo hoodie, and suits.

A Meta spokesperson said the items would range from $2.99 to $8.99, less expensive than the actual outfits by the designers. For example, Prada’s Matinee ostrich leather bag sells for $10,700.

Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, said the company plans to make the store an open marketplace where developers can create and sell clothing.

Digital goods will be an important way to express yourself in the metaverse and a big driver of the creative economy. I’m excited to add more brands and bring this to VR soon, too,” he added.

The Meta Avatars Store will launch next week in the United States, Canada, Thailand, and Mexico, and The company plans to introduce new brands for the store soon.

Fashion houses continue to partner with technology companies to design branded digital garments for consumers. In 2021, Fortnite introduced Balenciaga skins so players could purchase garments like a branded hoodie for their in-game characters. In Roblox, players can visit Gucci Town, a virtual garden featuring the brand’s logo, and a virtual store.
