Twitter Essays A New Tag to Identify Phone Number – Verified Accounts

With the vast online engagements, many social media tech platforms are taking providential actions to ensure that ghost accounts or suspicious accounts meet a dead-end and that misinformation and unmatched data are checked.

Recently, Whatsapp announced its privacy policy to protect users. Just a few days later, Twitter responded to the users’ quest on how to identify legit accounts from others.

Jane Manchun Wong, a tech blogger, posted on the plan to help the public identify accounts with a verified phone number, stating that a phone number – verified account would be indicated with a small grey-hued label.

What does this hold? Phone – number verified accounts is a step to ensure that Twitter accounts are authenticated and owned by real persons.

The social media platform policy allows users to use the same phone number for different accounts, but since Twitter also allows automated accounts, a distinguishing tag would be used to alert users of an automated post. It was also reported that this new plan could be used to filter tweets.

Meanwhile, Twitter is also including a tweet count feature aside from the analytics tool. However, the visibility of the tweet count has not been announced yet.

Since users are encouraged to link phone numbers to their accounts, concern has been raised that an unsecured phone number on a verified account would likely do more harm than good.

Despite the doubt, Twitter still encourages users to comply so as to provide more authenticity, reporting that about 5.4 million Twitter accounts with biodata were hacked in 2020.

Share your thoughts. Do you think millions of users’ phone numbers can still get hacked?
