US Auto Companies Pull Ads From Twitter

Since Elon Musk took the reins of leadership at Twitter, it’s been a roller coaster of events marked by chaos and uncertainty.

First, he laid off thousands of staff without much notice; then, he attached a price tag to Twitter’s blue tick verification, further confusing users and resulting in multiple impersonations of brands, celebrities, and even himself.

Confused about the social media giant’s direction and future, companies have started pulling their ads from the platform. At the moment, about five major automotive brands have temporarily stopped advertising on Twitter.

General Motors was among the first to suspend advertising on Twitter, In a statement, “As is the usual course of business with a significant change in a media platform, we have temporarily paused our paid advertising.” They added, “it is engaging with Twitter to understand the direction of the platform under their new ownership.” So, they plan on continuing advertising on the platform once the unrest settles.

Volkswagen has also suspended advertising on Twitter and urged its brands—Lamborghini, Porsche, Bentley, Audi and more to follow suit. Volkswagen said it is “closely observing the situation and will decide on the next steps depending on its evolvement.”

Stellantis also revealed that it is suspending advertising on Twitter. “We’re pausing paid advertising posts until we have a clearer understanding of the future of the platform under its new leadership,” stated Stellantis. Stellantis owns major American automotive brands Dodge, Jeep, Ram, and Chrysler, including foreign brands like Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Peugeot, and more.

Taking Volkswagen’s advice, Audi USA has also disclosed its plan to suspend advertising on the social media platform. Although these brands have paused advertising on Twitter, they all still have a presence on Twitter and continue to engage with customers.

It appears these brands are sceptical about the direction of twitter’s new leadership. However, it is hard not to wonder if their actions are driven by the fact that Elon Musk owns Tesla, a major competitor. Do you think their actions are driven by the fear of Twitter’s future or by fear of their competitor?
