Omeife, Africa’s First Humanoid

Over the years, Human-like robots have grown in popularity worldwide; we have had humanoids from Asia, North America, and finally, Africa.

Equipped to meet the world, Omeife is a 6-foot-tall female “Igbo” humanoid robot designed to provide assistance, indulge in intellectual-social engagement, and serve numerous functions.

She was created by STEMFocus, a subsidiary of Uniccon Group of Companies. Uniccon Group is one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing Technology startups located In Mabushi Abuja. They offer eclectic, innovative Tech solutions to government agencies and businesses across the continent.

According to the CEO, Chuks Ekwueme, “Omeife is not just multilingual, it can switch languages and interact with specific gestures—hand illustrations, smile, and other bodily gestures—that match the tone of the conversation.”

Omeife is fluent in eight languages ( English, French, Arabic, Kiswahili, Pidgin, Wazobia, Afrikaans, and Igbo) and deeply understands African culture and behavioural patterns.

Though there are a few other humanoid development efforts in Africa, Omeife is called the first because its the first African by design and purpose and the first to announce its completion. Chuks Ekwueme stated that the company would keep modeling this first version of Omeife—more languages, aesthetic improvement, advanced mobility, and vision—to develop Omeife 2.0.

Uniccon Group’s vision for “Omeife” is to improve it to the point of mass production and sell it from $30,000 upwards, about $12,000 more than Tesla’s humanoid’s floor price.

Here’s a rundown of Omeife’s current capabilities:

Conversation

Realtime understanding: Active listening and the ability to focus on a specific conversation thread as it’s happening.

Multilingual – Ability to switch languages

Native Accent – Detailed Vocabulary pronunciations of words, sentences, and phrases.

Vision

Though excited about the African technology space, how well do you think omeife ranks against others in terms of realistic design and functions? Do you see yourself getting one, or is the humanoid idea just too creepy?
