Tiktok is a social media platform that enables a quality virtual environment for creating and sharing short videos.
It allows sharing of video content about business, education, politics, etc., thereby increasing the marketability of goods and services.
However, following past social and political unrest that ensues due to penchant political posts, Tiktok has joined the social media tech community in the plan to filter posts in preparation of the US midterm elections coming up in November 2022.
Before now, Tiktok banned paid political ads, but campaigners bypassed the restriction by paying influencers to promote politically charged issues.
Eric Han, Tiktok’s representative in charge of US safety, said in a brief meeting with reporters that the porous channel would soon be occluded as Tiktok has made plans to meet influencers to discourage promoting political content as it is against the company’s policy.
Han also added that the company’s surveillance team would be on guard to monitor pointers that indicated paid political posts by creators or influencers and warned that such “red” posts would be deleted from the platform.
In 2020, the Meta-owned companies Facebook and Instagram restricted the promotion of political adverts a week before the election. Now, the company has announced to follow a similar step, stating that the same action implemented in 2020 would be re-implemented in the upcoming US midterm elections.
As part of measures for the election, Tiktok announced a new feature for accessing election information across the states; the information includes voter registration methods, how to locate polling units, and more.
In conjunction with various US democratic organizations, Tiktok intends to provide customized online content for users ranging from campus students, deaf voters, overseas voters, etc., through various groups.
