Patagonia Donates Profit To Fight Climate Change

Despite the unsurmountable benefits technology offers, many have argued that the recent technological development poses a serious threat to the environment’s value, which outweighs its advantage.

Proponents of this school of thought often nuanced that the increasing number of tech gadgets available to users has ultimately led to more consumption of fossil fuels used to generate power for these technological tools to work.

Aside from the use of non–fossil fuel options such as solar energy, hydroelectric power generation, and other renewable sources of power generation, electrical power generators continue to release Carbon(ii)oxide, CO, into the atmosphere, slowly causing a deleterious effect to the ecosystem.

Moreover, transportation gadgets (cars, trains, aircraft, etc.) which have found great usefulness in long-distance travel, are major contributors to tech-induced pollution.

A 2011 study reported that digital technologies constitute 2% of Carbon(iv)oxide, CO2 global emissions. Looking at the span of technological advancement in the last ten years, CO2 global emissions would likely have increased.

Therefore, Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, recently donated all proceeds from the company to support projects and organizations that are concerned about climatic crisis mitigation and biodiversity.

Patagonia is a clothing company based in America that specializes in outdoor clothing, expanding its product line to sporting wear, tools for outdoor activities like camping, fishing, and climbing, and the production of foods and beverages from sustainable sources.

In a quote, the company said, “While we’re doing our best to address the environmental crisis, it’s not enough. We needed to find a way to put more money into fighting the crisis while keeping the company’s value intact.”

The company announced that she privately held stock will now be managed by Patagonia Purpose Trust (a climate-focused trust group) and the Holdfast (a non–profit organization).

He further added that “Every dollar that is not reinvested back into Patagonia will be distributed as dividends to protect the planet.” The company expects to generate and donate $100 annually, depending on the yearly financial strength.

Patagonia company has shown selfless concern for the earth’s health. Thus if the plan is well implemented and sustained, we hope to see the earth suffer a near–zero side effect of technological advancement.
