What Is Elon Musk Doing Wrong?

The Twitter space seems to be losing its grip on its users, especially celebrities, as UK musical legend and humanitarian Sir Elton John has announced that he will be quitting the platform.

He claimed that twitter’s new policies have allowed misinformation to spread across the platform “All my life, I’ve tried to use music to bring people together. Yet it saddens me to see how misinformation is now being used to divide our world. I’ve decided to no longer use Twitter, given their recent policy change, which will allow misinformation to flourish unchecked.”

This tweet immediately drew the attention of Elon Musk, the new owner of the social media giant, as he went ahead to reply to Elton John’s tweet in which he said, “I do love your music. Hope you come back. Is there any particular misinformation that you are concerned about?”

Elon Musk’s restoration of free speech on the social media platform has not been without opposition. Twitter has always been a digital town square, an arena for sharing ideas and where all issues can be freely debated.

On the other hand, there are also a lot of internal battles on the rise, as employees that were laid off over a month ago have filed several lawsuits against Twitter. The first was filed on November 13th for sexual discrimination in the workplace, stating that 57% of employees that were recently laid off are females, the complaint also mentioned that musk has been “widely criticized for demeaning comments he has made against women” the plaintiffs demand than Twitter should give the jobs back to employees who wish to return to their the jobs and also get compensatory and distress damages.

A separate lawsuit was filed the same day, stating that twitters layoff was targeted at employees either on or about to go on medical or family leaves. Generally, the laid-off employees are not happy with the way and manner in which they lost their primary sources of livelihood without a sign, warning or compensation.

Since Elon’s controversial Twitter takeover, the platform has constantly been in the spotlight for a lot of different reasons, from layoffs, reinstatement of suspended accounts, lawsuits, free speech rights and many others. Two weeks ago, Twitter announced that it would no longer enforce a policy to combat misinformation about the COVID pandemic. This policy was claimed to become effective from November 23rd

As we edge towards the end of the year, where companies are going to sit down and analyze their profit margin, losses and how they can do better in the next year,

Twitter will most definitely need to retreat back to the drawing board and see where they might be going wrong and make it right in the coming year. What areas do you think Twitter needs to improve in next year?
