Elon Musk’s satellite Internet service, Starlink, gets approval in Nigeria

On Friday, 27th of May 2022, Elon Musk announced via Twitter that “Starlink approved by Nigeria & Mozambique.” The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) confirmed this statement by revealing that Starlink received two licenses. Starlink is operated by SpaceX.

The SpaceX satellite development facility in Redmond, Washington houses the Starlink research, development, manufacturing, and orbit control teams.

Starlink promises to provide high-speed, low-latency broadband internet in remote and rural locations across the globe. The hardware cost of $599 one-time and a monthly fee of $110. According to their website, it is ideally suited for areas where connectivity has been unreliable or completely unavailable. People across the globe are using Starlink to gain access to education, health services and even communications support during natural disasters.

The Starlink Kits comes with the Starlink, Wi-Fi router, cables, and base. You will need to have a clear view of the sky to connect.

With high speeds and latency as low as 20ms in most locations, Starlink enables video calls, online gaming, streaming, and other high data rate activities that historically have not been possible with satellite internet. Users will have the option to take Starlink with them via the Portability feature or Starlink for RVs service.

Is Starlink ready to battle MTN, Glo, Airtel, 9mobile, and over 100 other ISPs in Nigeria? Nairametrics reported yesterday that Starlink had acquired two licenses from the NCC, which include an International Gateway license and an ISP license.

At the current dollar rate of $1 to N600, the monthly cost of Starlink will be approximately 66,000 Naira. People living in cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt can not afford this price let alone people in rural areas. Do you think Elon Musk will Starlink affordable in Nigeria?
