Facebook: Why the name change

Facebook Inc changed its name to Meta Platforms Inc. On the 28th of October, 2021.

Mark Zuckerberg (co-founder and CEO of Facebook) announced the renaming of the company stating the change is to reflect the full breadth of what they do and the future they hope to help build.

He said their current name does not “represent everything that we’re doing today, let alone in the future”. To be fair, Facebook has always just been perceived as a social media company.

Meta hopes to be more than just a social media company, still retaining its vision which is “connecting people” they hope to rely on virtual reality technology which will allow the virtual versions of people and places to interact, game, and work with one another as if they were physically present, just like we have seen in some movies, often using VR headsets

The name change, however, doesn’t apply to its platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp, only the parent company that owns them.

Also, Facebook plans to start trading its shares under the new stock ticker MVRS from 1 December.
