Apple, Amazon, And Google On Smart Home Technology

Top Tech brands, Apple, Amazon, and Google, are partnering for the smart-home revolution. Ordinarily, it takes connecting different devices or gadgets with voice assistant features to work a smart-home. Well, an easy version of smart-home is approaching your doorstep soon.

The smart-home project has been a revolution for homes, but it gets complicated as time goes by. Radio protocols like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Zigbee, and Z-Wave have tried and failed. None of them can function well independently, and there are not many standard options available. This is where “Matter” comes in as an option.

Why Is Matter The Option?

Since 2019, Matter has embarked on a plan to improve and save smart-home technology standards. Matter is a technology in which its connections are unified and affiliated. Although it is not a smart home platform, it does not automate the home. It provides a reliable means for devices to connectively communicate. It has no form of dependency because it is an IP-based technology which is a distinctive feature.

Matter involves the union of tech companies to achieve the same goal. Over 200 tech companies are involved in this union, having Apple, Amazon, and Google as the main characters. The other companies involved include; Huawei, Comcast, Ikea, Legrand, signify, Resideo, Kroger, etc.

The sole purpose of this project is to enable swift connectivity between objects and devices while reducing the development complexity for manufacturers and improving compatibility for consumers. The collaboration of these companies is also to ensure that all standards are met to achieve success with the scheme. This will be a win-win situation for both the manufacturers and the consumers.

Apple, Amazon, and Google have the voice assistant feature Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant, respectively, so it is best believed that Matter will work with the voice assistant feature. Being an IP-based tech, it will be easy to connect to Wi-Fi, Thread, and Bluetooth low energy.

Sometimes in the home, when the internet is down, matter devices can still operate without the cloud by connecting them through Wi-Fi and Thread. However, the internet would still be needed for out-of-home control to enable communication between smartphones, smart speakers, bridges, etc.

How a Matter Smart Home Works

Smart devices that are Matter certified will be embodied in a Matter home, and a Matter controller or Wi-Fi access point will be needed. A Thread border router would also work, but it depends on the smart-home ecosystem.

Note that identifying a Matter certified device will have a matter logo showing that it is compatible. This means that when you purchase a gadget or product (for example, a door lock) with the matter logo, it automatically indicates that it will work and can be set up with the controller application.

In spite of the union and collaboration of top companies for the Matter of smart-home technology, the reality remains that there will always be competition. Matter will ensure a standard for portability and interoperability.

Google sets to include Matter in its future update, for which there is no release date yet. But the goal is to have the first certified matter device released by the end of 2021. But then, it seems the scheme is yet to be completed as there was no unveil or release at the end of 2021. We also expect Apple and Amazon to upgrade devices and gadgets to match the current standard.
