Meta’s New $1499 Quest Pro

Work-life just got interestingly expensive as the new work-focused VR headset joins the Quest lineup.

The Meta Quest Pro, priced at $1,499, was officially unveiled at this year’s Meta Connect. According to Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, The mixed-reality device is made for “businesses and professionals collaboration and creativity,”

Asides from its new natural facial expressions, which lets your avatar wink when you do, The Quest Pro features an “open periphery design.” The side openings let users see the real world around them as they roam through a virtual one.

For a more immersive experience, it also comes with removable magnetic light blockers and a full light blocker which will be available for $49.99 from Nov. 22. Its full-color passthrough technology allows an overlay of multiple screens on a user’s actual space, thus allowing users to navigate various virtual screens using a physical mouse and keyboard.

Furthermore, the Quest Pro features a “pancake-like” lens which is 40% thinner than the Quest 2. Boosting clearer visuals, Its two LCDs achieve 75 percent more contrast than the Quest 2, giving the Pro more vivid colors.

Like its predecessor, the Pro has an adjustment for lens spacing to accommodate varying inter-pupillary distances (IPDs). However, the Pro offers a broader range of 55mm to 75mm with an “eye relief dial” that lets users adjust the distance between their eyes and the lens.

Powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ platform, optimized for VR, The Quest Pro offers 50 percent more power and a better cooling ability than the Meta Quest 2.

The new Meta Quest Touch Pro controllers aren’t left out; the pair features an upgraded, ergonomic design with haptic capabilities through the company’s TruTouch Haptics system. The controllers’ three built-in sensors are the most remarkable improvement; they independently track movement to enable a 360-degree range of motion.

A stylus can also be added to the controller’s bottom, converting them into writing tools for Horizon Workrooms and other apps. Their batteries are charged through a charging dock and a 45W USB-C power adapter which is included with a Meta Quest Pro purchase.

From Oct. 25, The Quest Pro will be available to purchase online through the Meta Store. It will also sell through retail partners in four countries:

  • United States – Best Buy and Amazon
  • United Kingdom – Amazon, Argos, and Currys
  • Canada – Best Buy and Amazon
  • France – Amazon, Fnac, Boulanger

Even with the exciting new features, one must admit that the price hike is a major increase from its predecessor. Will this be a deterrent to adoption for the target market?
