Meta Announces Price Cuts For Its VR Headsets

Tech giant Meta has announced that some of the company’s VR (virtual reality) headsets will receive price cuts. The company has noticed that customers’ interest in the product has been lukewarm due to the headset’s price. To that effect, the company is lowering the cost of some of its high-end headsets by up to $500.

The Meta Quest Pro will cost just $999, down from its initial price of $1500. The Meta Quest Pro is the latest VR headset released, and the company has decided to slash the price of its latest product by 30%.

While the Meta Quest 2 (256 GB) will drop to $429.99, Meta raised its price of the Quest 2 headset by $100 after discovering that it was the cheapest VR headset.

You might be wondering, “Why is Meta slashing the price of its headsets?”

Firstly, this decision will make the VR product more attractive and affordable to a broader customer base. Meta’s official blog stated, “Our goal has always been to create hardware that is affordable for as many customers as possible to take advantage of all that VR has to offer.”

Secondly, Apple announced the release of their version of the VR headset in June, making the competition for the VR headset a little tighter. Meta must develop new ideas and marketing strategies to beat Apple and stay relevant in the market. Now that other companies are releasing similar headsets, Meta hopes the price reduction and features will help them gain a competitive edge.

This latest Meta roadmap leak shows that the company is planning for several more headset models in the coming years. These new devices are geared and equipped to accomplish more by producing a mixed-reality experience that combines AR (augmented reality) and VR (virtual reality). The devices will be more powerful yet thinner than existing VR headsets. It is another factor affecting the price cut, as Meta will want customers to purchase the available and newly launched models at an affordable price.

Meta has spent billions on its Metaverse products, as reports have shown that the company spent 13 billion dollars in 2022 alone. Since the company released its VR headset line, it has been able to sell only 20 million Quest headsets combined, which could be more encouraging.

The Metaverse has been on the minds and lips of millions who want to understand what it is and all that is possible. Meta is trying to make sure everyone experiences it at an affordable price.
