The Abeg App rose to fame as a Nigerian fintech solution when they were declared the headline sponsor of the reality TV show Big Brother Naija Season 6, tagged ” Shine Ya Eye.”
Abeg started with a tweet in 2018 when someone suggested creating an App for Nigerians to use as a platform to beg online, similar to the already existing Cash App.
Unlike other money-sending apps, Abeg created a system to send money in a fun and convenient way without the need to add bank account details. Abeg users can send and request money using their ‘Abeg Tag’ linked to their phone number registered with their BVN.
The App was founded by Dare Adekoya, Patricia Adoga, Muheez Amani, and Eniola in 2020, and barely a year after its launch, it was announced as the headline sponsor of Big Brother Naija.
This sponsorship opened a window of opportunity for the App as it could boast of over 1 million downloads during the show. It also received a wild social media following as everyone was excited to see what the App could offer.
However, Immediately after the show ended, so did the enthusiasm and buzz for the Abeg App, and since then, it has been kind of quiet in the Nigerian Fintech world.
Piggy Tech Global Limited, the owners of PiggyVest, silently acquired the Abeg App, which is now a subsidiary of Piggy Tech and was rebranded to POCKET.
After the takeover, the Central Bank of Nigeria granted the startup an AIP( Approval In Principle ) to qualify it as a mobile money operator. This will allow the app to perform transactions like USSD, agent acquisition, e-money issuing, etc.
The Pocket App is a social commerce and payment App. It is basically Abeg with a marketplace.
Piggy Tech decided to acquire the Abeg App and connect it with the already existing PiggyVest. Now, users saving for a particular item can easily send their money to the Pocket App to obtain the item they desire.
What makes this App more enjoyable is that when money is being transferred between Apps, there is a bonus attached, which is immediately paid to the user once the transaction is completed.
Have you tried out the Pocket App? What do you think about the numerous services it has to offer?
This is a new era for the Pocket App, and it is already making a statement by being the headline sponsor of the ongoing Big Brother Naija Season 7.
