Artificial Intelligence has marked a significant hallmark in the field of technology, such that computers and machines can work as though they have brains.
AI may be called the brain of technological devices since it does not just work like a programmed software but also has some similarity with the brain – the ability to learn and make decisions based on what has been learnt.
Even with this, does it mean that AI works like the mammalian brain?
AI is created through deep neural networks containing computational points called nodes that connect to different layers. The interconnection of nodes forms a network that learns using algorithms called Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The connecting nodes have varying strength that allows for the transmission of information.
Summarily, the brain works similarly; information in the form of neuronal signals is transmitted through neurons, with different brain compartments focusing on specific functions for learning, understanding and interpreting.
According to Jean Piaget’s cognitive theory of development, kids learn to recognize and identify objects and living things by asking, “What is this?” Similarly, AI is trained to identify and recognize faces, objects and so on.
In addition, some AI systems employ self-supervised learning algorithms. Just like the brain can make intuitions, AI can be trained to make certain intuitions. For instance, suggesting the presence of monkeys when a tree is detected.
But considering the power consumption of the brain, its capacity, instincts, and self-learning ability, the brain is the best model of intelligence.
Is it possible for a trained AI to make errors?
Just like humans often make mistakes in arithmetic, AI is also not exempted from making errors when some real-life issues were not considered in its design. Notwithstanding, AI can be a human intelligence assistant in this technological era.
It is, therefore not wrong to say, AI works like the human brain. However, the brain is superior to the most powerful AI because the human brain can solve certain problems it has never encountered or learnt before, unlike AI, which derives solutions from its tasks learned.
