TIKTOK: Most Popular Website

Surprisingly, Tiktok surpassed Google and emerged as the most visited site in 2021.

Tik-Tok is a short video-focused social network that aims at entertaining and inspiring creativity. It is owned by ByteDance, a Chinese company, and was launched in 2016 in China.

Google is an American search engine company founded in 1998 by Sergey Brin and Larry Page. Google offers over 50 internet services and products, ranging from Google Maps, Google Translate, Google Drive, etc.

Google organizes information around the world and makes it universally available. It is fairly expected that the most visited website in the world be Google as people use it every day to navigate through life. It also appeals to all ages as it informs and educates on every topic known.

However, Cloudflare ranked Tikok as the most visited site in 2021, surpassing Google, Facebook, Netflix, etc. TikTok initially started topping the charts as the most visited domain on February 17th, 2021.

In August, TikTok consistently ranked Number one for each month till the end of the year.

The feat is awe-inspiring when you consider that TikTok ranked Number 7 in 2020. TikTok had a growth surge during the pandemic, reaching 1 billion monthly active users in September. Many individuals resorted to TikTok for fun and relaxation while they spent more time at home to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

REASONS FOR TIKTOK’S POPULARITY

  • TikTok appeals greatly to Millennials and Gen Zers. It is especially popular with the surging Millennial and Gen Z populations, which together account for 62% of the world’s population.
  • Tiktok is easy to use and has catalyzed global interest in short-form video.
  • Most social networks are primarily built on connections between people who know each other in real life. TikTok is different. It focuses on optimizing the content you see, making it entirely possible to spend hours on TikTok without seeing anyone you know personally or follow because the platform is so driven by algorithmic discovery.

INSIGHTS

Google remains critical in brand visibility and digital presence. Still, it is encouraged that brands try to understand how TikTok fits within their customer’s journey and learn to speak the language of TikTok with playful content that emulates user-generated content.
