First, Elon Musk trashes Twitter and then takes over Twitter.
For many years, Elon Musk has used Twitter to share his opinions about the social media platform. His first tweet about twitter dates back to 2017, when he simply stated, “I love Twitter.” and was asked in a reply if he intended to buy it.
Subsequently, he trashed Twitter for censoring free speech; once, he tweeted, “Truth Social (terrible name) exists because Twitter censored free speech.” He threatened to create his own social media platform.
Time and Time, the billionaire has claimed Twitter does not uphold principles of free speech. Approximately a week after his incessant trashing of Twitter, on April 4th, Musk bought more than a 9% stake in Twitter and became the tech giant’s largest individual shareholder.
Musk’s push to buy Twitter came after he declined a seat on the company’s board following his stock purchase of 9.2 percent; some corporate governance experts speculated it may have been because such a role would come with the expectation that Musk would stop tweeting criticisms about the company.
On April 25th, Twitter and Elon Musk declared they’d reached an agreement for the billionaire to acquire the company for $44 billion cash and take it private. The deal is expected to close by the end of the year.
Discussions over the deal, which seemed uncertain, revved over the weekend after Musk wooed Twitter shareholders with financial details of his offer.
Also, former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey cogitated in on the deal late on Monday with a series of tweets that thanked both Musk and current Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal for “getting the company out of an impossible situation.”
“Twitter as a company has always been my sole issue and my biggest regret. It has been owned by Wall Street and the ad model. He said that taking it back from Wall Street is the correct first step,” he said.
Elon Musk, however, tweeted that he hoped his worst critics remain on Twitter minutes before the takeover became public.
What Musk Means For Twitter
Now that the world’s richest man is in charge of one of the world’s most influential social networks, what does it mean for Africa? Considering that he was born in South Africa and moved to Canada at age 17, Will former US President Donald Trump be allowed back on Twitter? What would happen to the teenager who Elon Musk tried to pay to stop him from tracking his movements and tweeting about it? Is free speech actually going to be uncensored? Will he impose more restrictions or not?
