Smartwatches are entering a new phase in the technology of health and wellness. In addition to the blood pressure monitoring system in smartwatches, the Apple watch has a new feature that can detect silent heart attacks and other underlying cardiac dysfunction.
One such silent cardiac problem which the Apple Watch can now detect is “Left Ventricular dysfunction” of the heart, which could ultimately result in many cardiac disorders. People with Left Ventricular dysfunction suffer a slow heart failure stage with no symptoms to initiate early treatment since it does not show any early signs.
The Apple Watch ECG feature delivers a significant advantage to the user with its high cardiac early detecting ability. The Electrocardiography (ECG) feature is designed to process results via a proprietary AI algorithm system by checking the electrical impulse and heart rate. The smart device also detects an irregular, fast heart rate that causes poor blood flow, a condition known as Atrial fibrillation (AFib).
While testing the ECG feature, the AI algorithm was able to detect patients with a low ejection fraction. Low ejection fraction is a health condition where the heart is not functioning well, so it cannot pump out sufficient blood. Before this technology on Apple Watch, low ejection fraction could only be detected in hospitals using sophisticated equipment fixed to the chest on close clinical examination, which is often expensive to run; but now, the complexity has been reduced to just wearing a smartwatch.
To use the ECG feature on the Apple watch; the smartwatch is connected to an ECG App on a smartphone, and the ECG App works on the series 4, series 5, series 6, series 7, and series 8 Apple watch. The feature is believed to reduce the risk of a stroke and other health complications.
As mind-blowing as this may be, the use of smartwatches to promote digital health is the beginning of mouthwatering expectations in technological healthcare innovations. The big question is, what next should we expect?
