Imagine a car that camouflages like a chameleon; well, that might be the future of technology. BMW unveiled the first colour-changing car earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show<\/a> in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There have been different ways of getting that colour\u2013transition effect on cars; the conventional car painting technique, Thermochromic paint that makes a car\u2019s colour change with the temperature of the environment, Thermal painting which enables the car to reflect the colour due to changes in electric charge and LumiLor paint which gives that unique photogenic (glowing) effect at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the near future, cars will be able to change colour in seconds to suit the driver\u2019s preference with just a button. The colour-changing technology could also be used to display adverts replacing the normal method of car branding and advertisement, which is usually time-consuming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reality of changing the colours of cars with just a button is possible with E \u2013 Ink technology. The E-Ink technology was developed in 1997 and is currently used in the fabrication of colour-changing cars. The covering of cars designed with E-Ink contains microcapsules which is filled with electrically charged coloured particles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is designed such that the microcapsules can easily move in a liquid matrix as the electric charge on either side varies. This makes the technology useful in text and background display for car adverts, colour changes and designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Colour-changing cars are the future of modern cars that fit the mercurial colour preferences of some users, and could also serve different purposes with no delay and operational cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, this technology may require some security backup system because it could be used as a camouflage for criminal operations if released for public use. Nevertheless, it is hopeful that it will be considered before the release to ensure a safe and legal use of colour-changing cars.
