Reportedly, it is competition O’Clock at Google!
The tech giant is concerned that ChatGPT might soon emerge as an alternative to Google search and is reacting by massively increasing efforts to bridge the technological gap between its artificial intelligence capabilities and that of ChatGPT.
ChatGPT, which stands for “chat generative pre-trained transformer”, is a chatbot launched by OpenAI in November 2022. It can interact in everyday dialogue and provide surprisingly humanlike responses.
Though ChatGPT is a text-generation AI model, Google is also allegedly working on text-to-video and text-to-image systems to compete with another OpenAI model called Dall-E 2.
According to a report, Google is being cautious about churning out new AI models for fear that it might spread fake or destructive information. Therefore, it reportedly told its Trust, Safety and Research teams to focus on new prototypes and products ahead of a conference scheduled for May 2023.
The report added that Google is working on a cloud-based AI tool that would use a similar technology that supports its LaMDA chatbot.
Google may also release early prototypes of some AI tools with questionable trust and safety standards to a few trusted users for testing, along with a warning that the models could produce false or offensive statements.
Sadly, no specific timeframe was mentioned for the launch of Google’s AI search demo. However, the demo for the chatbot search emphasized that Google will prioritize ” ensuring safety, getting facts right and getting rid of misinformation,” hoping to address the issue of AI’s responding to queries with inaccurate information.
According to a panel of Google’s executives, new product launches to be expected includes, but are not limited to, a product prototype testing App, an image generation studio, and MakerSuite ( a browser window from which other businesses can access a set of tools that can be used to create AI prototypes).
In addition, The tech giant is working on a code generation tool called PaLM-Coder 2, which is similar to Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot software and another that helps build Apps for smartphones named Colab + Android Studio.
Conveniently, Google was said to layoff 12,000 employees right about when its AI ambitions were made public. Do you think the layoffs are a result of its increased interest in AI?
Also, with the likes of Meta (Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp) and Google facing serious competition from Tiktok, ChatGPT and others, do you think a new technology era is emerging? One, where dominance might change hands?
